This was a minor super volcano. We're lucky it didn't blow up later, the additional lava and ash could have blocked out a lot more than it did if it waited a half a year or more. :x
Next volcano=lack of sun semi-globally for 5 days. You heard it here first!

That 'hole' in the universe is pretty creepy, too. I like this little snippet, though:
